Some Interesting Cleopatra Facts
• The popular Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt was actually Cleopatra VII Philopator. She was the last and strongest member of Ptolemaic dynasty of Greece that ruled over ancient Egypt and not the other six Cleopatra of the Ptolemaic family with the same name or the original Cleopatra, sister of Alexander the Great.
• Cleopatra VII was the only ruler of Ptolemaic dynasty to learn and speak Egyptian.
• It was Cleopatra herself and not Caesar who created her image as the reincarnation of an Egyptian goddess, Isis.
• Cleopatra wrote a medical treatise called ‘Cosmetics’ that was a pharmacological research by her and included many remedies for hair loss and dandruff.
• Cleopatra married her two brothers, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, as was the Egyptian custom of that age and upon their death became the sole ruler of Egypt. She shared a liaison with Julius Caesar and bore a son with him while she was married to her first brother. After Caesar’s death in 44 BC, Cleopatra and Mark Antony aligned with each other for political power which was followed by a romantic liaison. Cleopatra bore three children to Mark Anthony, a fraternal twins and one son.
• Cleopatra had four children (not from her marriage to her brothers) out of which only one survived to adulthood. Her only daughter Cleopatra Selene was the Queen of Mauretania.
